The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to G Live with young British conductor Jamie Phillips at the helm.
From Finzi’s pastoral exploration of the Severn Valley to Elgar’s sweeping beauty of the Malvern Hills, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra takes us on a magnificent musical journey through English landscapes and history. The evening opens with Vaughan Williams’ shimmering Fantasia, inspired by the 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis. Its sumptuous textures bely Vaughan William’s modern expression whilst simultaneously transporting us back to the English Renaissance.
Jumping forward just one decade, we find ourselves in the wistfulness of Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed this evening by soloist Benjamin Kruithof. Evoking a sense of reflection and introspection, it’s the perfect counterpart to Elgar’s beloved Enigma Variations with its profound exploration of friendship and the human spirit, so skilfully woven into an orchestral tapestry of unforgettable melodies. Finizi’s Severn Rhapsody more than holds its own with luminous textures, folk song influences and vivid depictions of nature, creating a sense of tranquillity and picturesque beauty to complete this evening of idyllic musical landscapes.
